It is almost 3 years of ownership of our Infiniti Q50 RS and things have been downhill for over 1 year. This car was awesome for about 1 year and about 7500 miles on the clock. It was so good I used it for one of my first Auto Fanatic car review videos that gained massive attention around the world including Nissan and Infiniti dealer networks. If you follow my channel and whats going on about a year ago I was shooting a video to discuss a bunch of cool modifications I had planned to do to my Q50. During the video shoot on the highway at 65MPH the engine belt shredded and caused the engine to shut down losing power steering and brakes while at highway speed in the middle lane. I barely made it off the highway safely as the car engulfed in smoke and overheated and caused a carnage of damage. Fast forward the dealer sucked in getting the car fixed in a timely fashion and the problem is a known issue for all these 3.0 TT engines. the pulley alignment causing the belt to track off the tensioner and BOOM, you’r out of luck fast. Ever since we got the car back i never romped on the car anymore with fear of being stranded again or getting into a serious accident if the belt was to fly off. When you’r in any car and something catastrophic happens the fear is locked into your subconscious forever. I was forced to take that video down from Youtube with all the bashing and fighting among everyone in the comments, I work hard doing these videos and promote a positive channel in every way and this was not going well over me breaking down over a known fault with my cars model.
We thought our little hiccup was over and we would easily ride the lease out and sorta enjoy it but things went downhill and fast. The car became very unstable at any highway speed in any temperature under all driving conditions. My wife complained and I then took the car for a few days to see what was going on. I assumed maybe she hit a pothole and bent something but after an exhaustive effort of spending over $2000 on all new Michelin Pilot AS3+ tires, 3 wheels alignments in 3 months, visits to the dealer and still no fix for the unstable nature of this car. I am at the point of just giving up and we are going to car shop next month. I will eat months of payments just to give this car back early for us to have a safer driving vehicle we can confidently use regularly. As the car remains it is very dangerous to drive on any highway as there is constant toe changes and pulling on the left and right. For having 3 alignments done and investigating the changes it is obvious the car either has loose subframes, broken lower control arm bushings, broken strut upper isolator mounts or something even more complex to pin point. The dealer wasted our time twice and I refuse to put anymore money into this issue.
I posted my video to reach out to others who own this Q50 platform to hear from others who may also be suffering from the same issue. When I posted the engine break down video there must have been 500+ owners who also had the same thing happen who commented or emailed me direct all over the world which was nice to hear but also alarming to see the failure rate of this issue at large.
Stay tuned and watch the video and hopefully this can help some of you guys. As we head into Spring 2019 there are so many better built and engineered car choices in this segment and if Nissan/Infiniti does not pour serious money into making this platform their best they are going to go downhill and fast with sales. JD Power and other sources rank the Infiniti Q50 as one of the most unreliable, poorly built cars in Infiniti’s history to date, that is not a good sign for the future unless something drastic happens internally with the company. Be forewarned if you are considering buying one of these cars , do not get suckered in with the cheap lease deals otherwise you be suffering 3 years of hell with a car that simply can not keep itself together on the road. Go buy the Kia Stinger Gt2 or Genesis G70 and you will have a much better engineered and built car, who would have ever thought such a thing in our times.
